For the next two weeks, Bob glided and I schlepped through five international airports in four countries. The first stop on our asian adventure was Japan, where Bob introduced me to his friends Tonegawa san at Araya, Ken Uegaki at Dia-Compe and Mr. Keizo Shimano at his family's eponymous bike-parts leviathan. The cliche "imagine yourself in my shoes" comes quickly to mind, but the truth is, we weren't wearing any. When I asked why SunTour's barefoot president seemed especially warm and friendly, my tour guide through the crown jewels of the international bicycle industry told me Mr. Kawai was his road-racing sponsor when he won the USCF TT championship in 1973. Needless to say, I never mentioned my Torker ride in '79. Why disappoint my new boss so soon in our journey? There would be plenty of opportunities for that when we got to Taiwan…
